What does the word spiritual mean to me? What has education- normal, informative, instructive and intellectually sound- to do with spiritual training? Is there a differentiation between a spiritual education and intellectual development? Can these two aspects be divorced from each other or can they be regarded as two phases of one effort?
‘Spiritual’ being that which is of Spirit (beyond individual or group soul expression) Essentially that which relates man to man and man to God….
If war undermines morality ; in which we can justify our actions of cruelty abuse disrespect and disregard for those who are vulnerable; and war begins in our minds then we must look at the causes and try to redress imbalances within ourselves and the world. It seems that Spirit in action is the opposite of war and so we need to find a way to orient people towards spirit (ie God/ the One Life/ wholeness) and ways of living from our spiritual core.
As we are now moving away from Atlantean consciousness and towards the Aryan race, an education that bridges both stages of soul’s evolution is necessary for now , but with a view to fully allowing the Aryan consciousness to embody and be expressed
With a child there is a natural progression of of the soul’s incarnation, usually in seven year phases, which if allowed to proceed in a healthy, uninterrupted supportive way can guide a child through to an adulthood that expresses the soul’s qualities as vocation and right place and contribution (to the whole), in an illumined consciousness. Each stage of the soul’s unfolding must be honoured and supported to establish the healthy flourishing of the next and subsequent stages. It is not until a person has reached the age of about fourteen that is healthy (safe/balanced) to encourage the development/flow of the intellect. To force early development means that other necessary stages of development are stunted (emotional and even physical problems can arise from not fully allowing these stages of incarnation to move through the child). Then the intellect flourishes with very liitle encouragement and the will is developed at the right stage and will fire the teenager’s thirst for study and investigation and there will be no need to force exams upon them as unnecessry motivations or pressure. Because the Will is there. This thirst for knowledge then becomes in later life wisdom as these stages are met with vision and wisdom in the teacher. If the child is and feels understood at each stage of its unfoldment it becomes fearless (in expression) Where they are shown in early years to assume an unselfish attitude to associates then right human relations loving understanding co-opreative goodwill right orientation and world citizenship arise naturally. Responsibility and relationship (based on training and example) cannot be impressed through the intellect alone. Coming to know the life pulsing through the individual as connected ( and a small part of) the entire kingdom of forms, will naturally lead to the intellect engaging with further exploration and discovery (at the right stage of development: and I think that is around age 21 onwards) of life from a spiritual aspect; though a seeking mind can be found in young people it’s often as a felt-sense than an understanding with the intellect.
Our present culture is in denial of our spirituality which is in effect the death process. The education systems in place now are geared to training children for the society in which they live, rather than to be global citizens (aware of their unique value and place and contribution to the whole)effectively deadening any exploration into the spiritual realms.
It seems that there are more and more children being diagnosed with ADD or autism or Asperger’s syndrome and there are more and more cases of child diabetes (apparently these figures correspond to ages 5 and 11, both ages when a major phase of school life begins)This seems to happen when there is a stimulatin of the intellect at an inappropriate age. These trends suggest to me that ‘education’ does not suit a growing number of children.
They seem to be ‘rejecting the system’. Instead of drugging them, labelling them or ignoring them we need to look closely at their gifts and allow their needs to show us a way forward by adapting our education systems to support their well-being and spiritual growth. I have no evidence, but it seems these childern are the harbingers of a new type of consciousness embodied, and as such they are bridging the old and new education systems. They are the prototypes of the new emerging consciousness in physical form and are extremely intelligent, sensitive and gifted children. Putting them into the current education system creates enormous suffering for them. It is literally like prison to them and that’s how they describe it .By listening to them we can develop a new system and approach and way of thinking to put in place a new template for education that fully expresses the ideals of valuing the individual and yet an inclusivity and sense of responsibility and so place within the greater whole of humanity
At this stage we are still bridging 2 states consciousness so the task is difficult. Rudolph Steiner had a great vision of education for the incarnating soul during these times. There is a broad spectrum of the stages of soul unfoldment in evidence in the children at these schools, some embody the old consciousness, some are the bridgers and some are now clearly carrying a whole new template of consciousness but the education is nevertheless valuable, because it prepares the child to recieve the indwelling soul impulses working well at all stages on the path of unfoldment of the soul’s development. I believe there are many teachers of vision and wisdom working, not only in Steiner schools, but in many schools, including ‘mainstream’. The main problems are lack of funding (and so overcrowding) and adherence to stifling rules of administration and criteria of curricula fulfillment
The key to changing our future lies in rehabilitating our children; giving all children throughout all walks of life in every country a chance to learn the inherent value of themselves and within the greater context of the entire human family.
This is vast in implications of scope of implementation and repercussions of setting this wrong right or bringing back into a natural state what has become so out of balance that the very spirit of humanity (and so the spiritual aspect which flows throughout all life) has been distorted. There must be a healthier and fairer distribution of wealth and resources and a true and global history of each country and the world taught so we can change our perspective and identity and become free of conditioning to express (and release) our inner spiritual nature.
The sabotage to our natural loving and healthy state seems so ridiculously absurd that I can’t help but wonder if there is some external influence seeking to undermine the spiritual engagement of humanity as it evolves through its amnesia of dense matter/
I’m aware of the ritualistic and continuing abuse, trafficking and genocide of children. This has been comimg out in the open more and more recently (vatican, Canada)
I find it so abhorrent to go there but when I have managed to visit that place of suffering I find the trauma to the innocence and purity of souls trying to incarnate so beyond excruciatingly painful that I understand some of the effect on the collective of that severe trauma.
Ok I seem to be going off topic; so spiritual has to do with our natural healthy connection with God; seeing that as our natural state; and as the process of evolution moves seeing our place and our relationship with God and the universe.
Our greatest resource and teacher is Nature. Our educational systems so far have conditioned us away from our connection with God as our societies have become more materialistc with power and possessions in the hands of a few; now it is time for us to equip our children (and ensure our progress in evolution) to live in balance with Spirit and the Earth and all who dwell on her; this is no small discussion; but I am running out of steam…
